Gangs and Street Crime
Since its formation, ACF has played a vital role in easing tensions between rival gangs and individuals, locally and across other London boroughs. Our work significantly reduces the possibility of young people being seriously or even fatally injured and has removed many weapons from the streets. ACF has helped many local residents feel much safer due to the reduction in gang activity on estates and in the streets. We also facilitate structured meetings between parents and their children in order to resolve misunderstandings so often at the root of behavioural problems.
Having it out, face to face
ACF actively prevents crimes from being committed through early detection strategies and positive dialogue with “would be” perpetrators and their associates. ‘Having it out face to face’ in a controlled environment allows both parties to maintain their respective “street cred”, which is often at the centre of a dispute.
We then help young people to access legitimate alternative sources of income and employment opportunities as a way out of gang and street crime. We believe that it is essential to maintain this two-tier strategy. We are constantly repeating our message at a policy development level in meetings with relevant local and central Government bodies: the key to effective action is meaningful inclusion
Face to face and group discussions have helped to highlight daunting facts which may otherwise have gone undiscovered. Many of our young people are experiencing some serious problems that will scar them as they move into adulthood. We are here to provide them with the serious help that they urgently need.
The dynamics of the street must be understood. Without this understanding it is hard to venture into the hearts and minds of our young people, which must be done in order for them to become our Leaders of tomorrow.
... Insha’Allah.
